Stara Komenda Brewery

Warzelnia
T

he Stara Komenda Brewery is a place combining the features of the brewing company, restaurant and pub. There were dozens of such places in Szczecin in the West Pomeranian region. Today, Stara Komenda Brewery as the first one returns to this style and offers its guests a natural beer brewed on site.

In the building aged more than 150 years, in the place of the former military headquarters, we have reconstructed the climate of the pre-war pub and eatery. Here, everyone can witness the production process, which is based on the centuries-old brewing tradition. Brewing takes place with use of modern equipment, using only four ingredients: water, malt, hops and yeast.

The beer from the Stara Komenda Brewery is matured for several weeks. During this time it takes a bunch of flavours and aromas, and gets naturally saturated with carbon dioxide. Our beers are unpasteurised and unfiltered so they do not lose their flavour. They contain vitamins B, PP, mineral salts and trace elements.

Beer from our brewery

  • pilsner - refreshing beer with a pale yellowish colour, heavily hopped. Made from barley malt and yeast of lower fermentation.
  • dark lager - beer with light-brown colour, caramel flavour and a delicate note of hop aroma. Made from three types of barley malt and yeast of lower fermentation
  • wheat beer - beer prepared for the summer season with a pale yellowish colour, and noticeable banana and clove flavour. Made from wheat malt with use of top fermentation yeast.

History of the building

T

he history of the Military Garrison Headquarters building at the 3 Batory Square is related to the spatial development of Szczecin in the middle of the nineteenth century. Due to the important role that the building intended for the garrison had had to meet, it was decided that it would be erected at one of the two main squares of the New Town.

The design of the military headquarters was prepared in 1865 by the then construction adviser Behnke. Later the same year the construction of foundations had started, and in the following year the side walls and roofing were constructed. The building, along with a beautiful garden was opened in October 1867.

In 1908 the military headquarters was handed-over by the military authorities to the city. The city authorities had decided to rebuild and repair the 40-year-old building, and after the Second World War they allocated it for the Film Distribution Head Office (Film-Art). Currently the building houses law firms and private companies.

The part intended for the Old Garrison Headquarters Brewery [Browar Stara Komenda] waits until we create together a new history for it.
